Aretha Franklin: 1942-2018

Early Life in Music (1942-1956) 

Born in Memphis but raised in Detroit, Aretha Franklin was immersed in music from a young age. Her father, a Baptist minister, led a congregation where Aretha began singing gospel. This environment in Detroit laid the foundation for her musical talents.

Signing with Columbia Records (1956-1966) 

At 18, Franklin transitioned from singing gospel to pursue a career in pop and R&B. Signing with Columbia Records, she released several albums, showcasing her powerful voice, but she didn't achieve significant commercial success during these years.

Rise to Fame with Atlantic Records (1967-1979) 

Franklin's move to Atlantic Records marked the beginning of her rise to stardom. Hits like "Respect" and "I Say a Little Prayer" catapulted her to international fame. She became an icon of soul music and a voice for civil rights.

Continued Success and Icon Status (1980-1999) 

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Franklin continued to release hit songs. Her role in the film "The Blues Brothers" expanded her fame. She became the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

Later Career and Legacy (2000-2018) 

In her later years, Franklin remained an influential figure in music. Her performances at presidential inaugurations and other major events solidified her status as a cultural icon. She passed away in 2018, leaving a legacy as the Queen of Soul.
